Dooring accidents: "As a cyclist, you hardly have a chance"

The death of actress Wanda Perdelwitz has shocked Hamburg. The 41-year-old, known from the TV series "Großstadtrevier," died on October 6th as a result of a serious bicycle accident that occurred on September 28th near Dammtor train station. A car stopped on the side of the road Perdelwitz was riding on, the passenger opened the door, and Perdelwitz collided with full force. A so-called "dooring accident": This is the term used to describe collisions in which cyclists crash into suddenly opened car doors. Such accidents are preventable: The German Insurance Accident Research (UDV) has been warning for years that the danger is underestimated. Kirstin Zeidler, Head of Insurance Accident Research, explains why these accidents are so treacherous and what would help prevent them.
